Advancing Photovoltaic Recycling Through Sonoprocessing
Earlier this year, APOLLO partner, the University of Glasgow (UoG) presented research from the project at the 19th European Society of Sonochemistry (ESS) Meeting, held in Greece.
The European Society of Sonochemistry Meeting brings together researchers, innovators, industry representatives and other stakeholders working on the development and application of sonochemistry and ultrasound technologies. The 2026 conference provided an opportunity to exchange the latest research findings, explore emerging applications of sonoprocessing, and strengthen connections between academic research and industrial applications.
As part of Session 3: Ultrasound Processing, the University of Glasgow (UoG) presented High Throughput Flow Sonoprocessing of Shredded Photovoltaics for Technology Critical Metal Extraction. The presentation was delivered by the UoG research team comprising B. Jacobson, A. Parsa, P. Daly, J. Cameron, J. Kettle, A. Feeney and P. Prentice.
The research directly contributes to APOLLO’s focus on improving the recovery of valuable and technology-critical materials from end-of-life photovoltaic technologies. By investigating high-throughput flow sonoprocessing of shredded photovoltaic materials, the work explores how ultrasound can support more efficient processing and extraction of critical metals from PV waste.
Presenting this research at a specialised international conference such as ESS19 provided an opportunity to share APOLLO’s work with the wider sonochemistry and materials-processing community, exchange knowledge with researchers and potential industry partners, and raise awareness of new approaches to sustainable photovoltaic recycling.
The conference took place in Chania, Crete, from 25 to 29 May 2026, bringing together the European sonochemistry community around advances in ultrasound processing and its applications across research and industry.
